My sister lives rent-free in my yard – now officials are looking at zoning laws

A HOMEOWNER built a tiny home in her backyard that allowed her sister to live rent-free.

Nancy Crane, from Tampa, Florida, said she built the small property last year but the city could be set to change its rules around these.

The City of Tampa’s potential zoning law change could see an increase in Accessory Dwelling Units and tiny homes in yards.

Crane shared what she loved about the tiny home she had built, according to ABC affiliate WFTS.

“It’s been fantastic, it’s wonderful for our family,” she said.

“My sister’s been here for three months. She’s coming down from the north for the winter.”

This success story could be expanded across the city as zoning laws could be changed.

Tampa’s Planning Director, Stephen Benson, said these changes would make it easier for people to build tiny homes.

“There’s a lot of interest in talking about ADUs and putting an ADU on their property and changing the rules so it’s a little bit easier to do so,” Benson said.

“They’re the most likely opportunity to create an affordable place to live that’s not controlled for instance through something like an income restriction or rent control,” he added.

Currently, the City of Tampa only allows certain areas of the city to build tiny homes on their property.

A potential change could add more zip codes to this list as currently only people in 33603, 33604, and 33605 can do this.

I hear they say ‘bigger is better’ but our 250 sq ft tiny home begs to differ – it’s freedom on wheels, even with 2 kids

Another potential change could impact where the owner of the tiny house lives.

This person would have to live on the site of the tiny home, so they would be allowed to live in the small property or the primary house on the land.

The City of Tampa has said it hopes tiny properties can provide more affordable housing in the area.

Benson said these changes will be proposed to the city council this summer.

The U.S. Sun has reached out to the City of Tampa for comment.
